What is SPD?

If you’re new to cycling—especially gravel, mountain, or adventure riding—you’ve likely heard the term “SPD” thrown around when people talk about pedals or shoes. But what exactly is SPD, and why do so many riders (beginners and pros alike) swear by it? In this article, we’ll break down what SPD stands for, how it works, and why it might be the perfect pedal system for your gravel cycling setup—particularly if you’re just getting started or riding in your 50s and beyond.

What does it mean?

SPD stands for Shimano Pedaling Dynamics, a clipless pedal and cleat system developed by Shimano. It’s one of the most common pedal systems used for gravel, mountain, touring, and commuter cycling—and it’s a great option for beginners, especially riders aged 50+.

How SPD Works:

  • Clipless: Despite the name, clipless pedals involve “clipping in.” You attach a metal cleat to the bottom of your cycling shoe, which clicks into a compatible pedal.
  • 2-bolt system: SPD cleats use two bolts to attach to the shoe and are recessed into the sole, making it much easier to walk compared to road cycling cleats.

Benefits of SPD for Gravel Riders (especially over 50):

  • Walkability: Shoes look like hiking shoes and are comfortable off the bike.
  • Secure but forgiving: The cleat system holds your foot in place but releases easily with a heel twist.
  • Efficient pedaling: Your foot is more stable and power transfer improves.
  • Beginner-friendly: You can adjust the release tension on the pedal to make clipping in and out easier as you learn.

️Things to Know:

  • You’ll need SPD-compatible shoes and SPD pedals (like Shimano M520 or combination pedals).
  • There’s a short learning curve—practice in a doorway or on soft grass helps build confidence.
